Foundation Portfolio Evaluation

In our final media product 'The Youth' we used, developed and challenged forms and conventions of real media products in a number of ways such as through genre and mise en scene. When planning our film, we studied some films that we felt would help develop our ideas and challenge our media skills. In looking at genre, we wanted a to create an eerie atmosphere of thriller/horror and so we looked at such films as 'The Blair Witch Project'. In doing so we looked at the mise en scene in order that we could use and develop the ideas in the film to give the effect we wanted in 'The Youth'. We noticed that stereotypical ideas of horror were key to creating a big impact and showing the audience that this was a shocking and scary film. These stereotypes and clichés included: dark lighting, forests, shaking 1st person camera shots, distress and panic. The dark lighting within the forest, created an eerie effect of there being no way out because the characters would be surrounded by trees for as far as you can see. The 1st person camera shots mixed with the distress and panic in the dialogue added the sense of desperation and really draws the audience into the action, making them feel as though they are experiencing the footage first hand (*see 1:27 - 1:30 minutes). Having studied this, we adapted our research, and developed our own attempt at creating a theme of horror. In doing so I feel that we really grabbed the essence of horror for our film.

*'The Blair Witch Project, eerie film set.*

Looking at such films as 'Them', we also picked up on the effect of hearing a sound out of shot, with the actor reacting this. This idea is almost spine chilling as you are unaware of what the sound is or where it came from, and leaves the character looking vulnerable, positioning the audience on the edge of their seats. We developed this further in our media product by producing a number of quick shots of Kia Tasbihgou alone in the forest, in which he hears a sound and swiftly spins around in fright (*see 1:39 - 1:49 minutes).

Another motion picture we studied was 'Eden Lake'. This film uses a lot of violence to create its horror and shocking effect on the audience. We liked this element of the film and decided to adapt it in order to make our film less of a cliché Gothic horror. We did this by getting Roman Kemp (one of the gang members) to shout aggressively as though he is threatening one of the teenagers. The next shot we filmed was of Roman swinging a baseball bat at the camera, which we edited with a impacting sound effect and a black out in order to create the effect that he just hit someone, again filmed in 1st person, drawing the audience further into the terror (*see 1:52 - 1:59 minutes).

*'Eden Lake', violent torture.*

Other ways in which we developed forms and conventions of real media products in our production of 'The Youth' was in editing. When editing our film on Final Cut Express, we decided to put lots of short, fast paced shots together. We felt that this added a sense of diving straight into the action, and built up suspense and shock in the motion picture. The use of having broken-up flashbacks also added pace and action to the film, as the viewer takes a lot of information from the start, really engaging the audience. We developed this idea from the beginning of 'Severance' (as shown below), in which they dive straight into the action by showing shots from the end of the film at the beginning, immediately gripping the audience.

Our media product is about a gang of youths who terrorise a group of teenagers in a forest. In doing this we had to represent youth, we did this through clothes, surroundings, voice, action, dialogue and props.

In order to separate the two groups of teenagers, we gave them different styles. The gang of youths were dressed in tracksuits, with such things as hats and hoods, creating a big daunting body shape. We felt that this portrayed a stereotypical 'chav', who are stereotypically aggressive, which was complimented by the prop of a baseball bat, which as used as a weapon. This fitted the part perfectly as we wanted an intimidating gang in order to make the audience genuinely scared for the group of teenagers.

*A shot from 'Eden Lake' of the terrorising youths.*

The group of teenagers who were terrorised we dressed in the opposite that included, skinny jeans and jumpers, making the characters look small and vulnerable.

The environment had two effects in our film. The first was that it made the gang of youths look more menacing as the forest made it look as though they were in a middle of nowhere and that there was no escape, creating second effect which was to make the teenagers look as though they were trapped.

The action in the film shows a lot of running and restlessness. There isn't a single shot when someone isn't moving. Even when Kia is in the police station in the cuts in between the forest shots, he is restlessly running his hands through his hair. This represents teenagers has energetic and troubled.

The dialogue and tone of voice used in our film, such as Roman shouting 'Told you not to come here! I'm gonna kill you!' showed that the gang of youths were aggressive and violent (*see 1:52 - 1:57 minutes). This was emphasised by the distressed and tormented dialogue of Kia in the police station.

By representing the social groups of teenagers through clothes, surroundings, voice, action, dialogue and props, we hoped to engage a variety of audiences, including the two social groups of teenagers represented within the film. We felt that by including two different styles of teenagers in 'The Youth', as well as adding aggressive, troubled, and vulnerable personalities we would intrigue various audiences as people will not only be interested to see a film which contained their style, but the personalities present in the film, are quite common in teenagers in today's society, and so some viewers may be interested to see how each character copes with the issues risen within the film.

In studying different production companies such as Rom-com lover Working Title, I feel that the kind of media institution that might distribute our media product would be Channel 4's Film 4. I believe this as they have released blockbuster hits with similar target audiences to ours. We can see this as they have produced lots of films with violence, and in most if not all their films, there is an attractive main cast member. This is evident in such films as 'Donkey Punch' a new thriller/horror film about a group of young adults who enter into youthful activities such as drug taking and sexual acts, but then all end up trying to kill each other. Film 4 is also a British film production company and so would jump at the chance of distributing new British talent. Not to mention, the fact that our film has some educational purpose in the way it deals with the lives of teenagers and the emotions they go through such as troubled and violent, allowing viewers to study teenagers and how they cope is desperate situations. Also, our film jumps straight into the action with such things as flashbacks, leaving the viewer on the edge of their seat after the first minute and a half.

The target audience for 'The Youth' was teenage - middle age. We felt that the horrific events we wished to portray in the film wouldn't be suitable for young children and would not appeal to the elderly. However, we felt it would be interesting to teenagers and adults from an educational point of view (studying teenagers and how they cope is desperate situations) as well as for entertainment value. In order target this audience, we incorporated an investigation (the police station shots) into the story, adding the theme of crime/thriller, making the audience reflect on the crimes and the experiences the teenagers go through. For entertainment value, we added violence and horror, making an exciting story engaging the audience.

In order to attract and address our target audience, we used a number of techniques. The first one was in planning. When deciding how to shoot our motion picture, we studied hit films such as 'Severance'. In developing ideas, which stem from these amazing productions, we already intrigue viewers as they will want to see more movies like these hits.

To advertise our film and placements for actors, we used Facebook. This was another trick into drawing in our target audience as young people use Facebook, and so we immediately skipped children and elderly and drove our marketing straight into the young public.

'The Youth' Facebook Group

Within the actual film itself we use a few techniques to engage the audience. Violence is a great seller in today's society, we can see this by simply walking into Blockbusters where there are shelves and shelves of violent movies. In the knowledge of this putting violence in our film was key for targeting the audience we wanted. Sex is also a key selling point in the media, and so by intertwining a love triangle, along with an attractive leading lady, Alex Smith, we have succeeded in another technique to draw our target audience in.

Within planning we also created a poster. it quite simple using red font (chosen as red is so often associated with blood and danger), and a black and white image of the moon shinning down between some trees (adding a sense of horror and mystery). Having grabbed the essence of horror with the picture and the colour, we felt that the simplicity of the poster would intrigue our audience further as it doesn't give too much of the film away.

In filming this media product, and through reflecting on my preliminary task I have come across a number of difficulties, successes and new technologies, all of which I have learnt from. On one occasion, we went out filming, and once we had arrived at our filming destination, we realised that the camera had not been charged up. However, we did not give up, instead we searched the woods and found a house in which we asked the owner if we could charge our battery. This not only taught me to double check equipment before we come out for a shoot, but also to not give up and use every resource possible. Another problem we came across was special effects. In order to introduce violence into our film, we wanted to try and make blood (as shown below, 'Eden Lake'. Our attempt at this included the cliché children's fake blood of Ketchup, and then a second attempt of mixing red food colouring with honey. Neither of which looked realistic. So unfortunately we could not create this special effect, but we managed to get around this by creating the effect of violence through such shots as the 1st person baseball bat smack, instead of actually showing someone covered in blood.

*'Eden Lake', special effects - blood.*

In creating the media project, I also learnt how to edit film, creating special effects with Final Cut Express and adding in credits with Live Type, all on the Apple Mac. I learnt some very interesting and important skills in doing so, all of which helped my group and I to add the finishing touches in order to create the right effects for our target audience. This included adding fuzzy 'bad TV' effects for our DVD menu, adding an eerie edge to the presentation of our film. We were also able to darken the lighting on all of our shots, allowing us to create a spooky atmosphere, much like how 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Them' had grabbed the essence of horror by using a lot of dark footage. Whilst editing 'The Youth' I also learnt how to mix sound effects and soundtracks with the footage, in order to create impacting and scary atmospheres and moods.

All in all I feel that I have learnt a variety of skills from producing this media product including: planning (costumes, storyboards, props, sets, advertisement, and recruiting actors); editing footage, sound and text; as well as ways of selling films through developing ideas and using effects within the films themselves.

Film Preparation

In preparation for our film, we put together this plan. The poster we designed within this plan was an advertisement around our school. We kept it quite simple using red font, and a black and white image of the moon shinning down between some trees. The font colour was chosen as red is so often associated with blood and danger. We chose the picture of the woods and the moon as, not only is our film based in the woods, but this adds a sense of horror and mystery to our poster. I say this as black and white images look quite Gothic, adding the horror effect, emphasised by the moon, acting almost as a sinister eye looking down on the horrific events in the forest. We also felt that the picture didn't give too much of the film away, and so this added mystery to the poster.

The Youth - Storyboard

In our planning before we started filming, we put together this storyboard to give ourselves a structure to work towards. When making this storyboard, we looked over the various film influences we found such as 'The Blair Witch Project', in order to give us a few ideas, constantly thinking of ways we could make our film look eerie and impacting.

The Youth Synopsis

'Youth' - Synopsis

Based on a true story. In 1998 a group of ill-fated teens were camping in a tyrannized woodland and were never seen again. Lifelong friends Alex Jones, Tom Harris and Nikki Smith were celebrating their last night together before going to university. Alex, 18, has been longing after Nikki, secretly, for years. Nikki, unfortunately is in a long term relationship and Alex has to put on a façade, for the sake of their friendship. Tom, the cynic, is Alex's best friend. When they unwittingly stumble upon another group of teens, Alex feels obliged to protect Nikki, while Tom refuses to submit to the Youth's reign; the Youth that are hunting them down, like lambs to the slaughter.

The 'Youth' are a gang like no other.

The Youth - Update

We went out the other weekend to Ashridge Woods, in which we started filming our thriller, 'The Youth'. Having started editing the footage, we have decided to use it as a title page for the DVD. We have used unwanted footage in order to practise our editing skills by looking at the different effects which we can insert into our film such as contrast, saturation, and bad TV (slightly fuzzy screen, like a badly filmed video). We are continuing filming this Saturday (28th February).

Location and Action shots will be uploaded shortly.

Essay Plan

Institutions and Audiences

Discuss the issues raised by the institutions' need to target specific audiences within a media industry which you have studied.

Introduction
- Outline Institutions (Working Title, Film 4, Handmade Films) and context.

Production Practices
- Where the Institutions are based and who they are.
- What films they are involved in.
- Target Audience e.g. Working Title - Wimbledon - UK/US broad audience appeal - casting - setting - scripting.

Distribution and Marketing
- 2 Films where the same company has done things differently to achieve specific results e.g. Film 4 - Slumdog Millionaire and Yasmin.

Use of Technology
-How the Production companies use technology such as the Internet, 3G, DVD, Blu Ray etc. Specific example of films that have been distributed with this in mind.

Audience Challenges
- People don't go to the cinema, but they buy the film. Find example where audience have thought they will buy the film or watch it online, instead of going to the cinema.

The Youth - Facebook Group

In order to publicise our film and gain volunteers for actors, I created a Facebook group, which contains information on the film to interest the volunteers, this will be updated duly with scripts, synopsis and other details.

ACTORS NEEDED FOR HORROR FILM

Through using sites like Facebook and Myspace during my life, i have noticed ALOT of advertisements for films and quite a few options to be included in films. I think this is a great way to market films as it targets a broad audience, and seeing as these are popular sites, people will think that the film must be good in order for it to be publicised on these sites. However, seeing as we are not selling our film, i used Facebook for another use. I found Facebook a great way to organise events, and so by making a group we could contact everyone at the same time, sending them details about times and locations etc.

In the end we managed to gain 11 people (including ourselves) who wanted to act in our film, of these 11 we choose 8 due to time arrangements, accessibility and skill.

My Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task, we had to make a short film showing someone walking into a room, having a conversation, and walking back out of the room. Here is my footage:

I also drew a storyboard to coincide with my short film:

L4YER CAK3

I have just done a media case study on 'Layer Cake', otherwise known as 'L4YER CAK3'. I found it particularly interesting how they advertised the movie. One way of doing so was to put the very attractive Sienna Miller in her underwear on a poster saying 'Layer Cake'. This was good advertising as the target audience for the film was male, and so having an extremely good looking blond, posing in her underwear, immediately attracts the average males eye, and so intrigues them into what the film is about, and finally makes them go to watch the film itself. Another point i picked up on was the fact that although Sienna Miller had a minor part in the actual motion picture, she was used as a main sales device, putting her on the front and back cover of the DVD box, and on a lot of the promotional posters. Again this was in order to attract the male audience. After all, what more could a guy want in a movie than a sexy blond in her underwear?

In the end, deservingly, 'Layer Cake' made a smashing $11,850,214 worldwide gross.

Thriller

As not only being a Media Studies student, but also an English Literature student, we have been studying the genre of 'Thriller'. In doing so i found a list of key features and conventions of a thriller, and thought that it might come in use for my groups film.

Thriller
  • Film is led by the plot
  • Fast pace
  • Suspense
  • Dialogue and Action
  • Characters often stereostypes
  • Characters easily identifiable as 'goodies' or 'baddies'
  • Settings can span the globe
  • Chases
  • Themes: political conspiracy, international crime, terroism, innocents on the run, individuals suffering from psychosis
  • Central figure normally male
  • Hero isolated - 'going it alone'
  • Not much emphasis on relationships
  • Superficial sexual encounters

The representation of Youth in an Episode of Skins

Skins Series 2 – Episode 1
Minutes: 1.00 – 4.52

In this episode of Skins, the Mise en Scene, Cinematography, Editing and Sound contribute to the representation of Youth through such things as costume, speed, and music.

The opening of this scene is an establishing shot of the inside of a church. In this shot a teenage boy (the character of Maxxie) starts some diegetic dance music and runs towards the camera. You could take this first shot to shows a range of different representation. This shows that youth use their resources well as normally you would practise dancing in a gym or dance studio, but instead he is dancing in a church. The idea that the church is one of his resources, suggests that youth are religious. Having said this you could take the view that this represents youth as rebellious and disrespectful as they are blasting out dance music throughout a peaceful church in order to dance inside it.

We are then presented with two other dancers. One is a well-built black teenage boy. The other is a toned white teenage girl. This represents youth as being accepting of other sexes and ethnicities. We can see that all three characters are in modern clothing and look well kept. They are all wearing tank tops and baggy trousers, this suggests youth as being united and well organised, which is then emphasized by the extremely well choreographed dance routine, which follows. This dance routine is synchronized and obviously well rehearsed, showing great organisation and skill within the group of youths. Having spot lights shinning down on them during this rehearsal suggest to me that they aren’t just doing any old routing in any place they can find, instead I feel that this shows they have pride in what they do.

In this dance scene, the cinematography is constantly changing from medium shots to close-ups and from low angle shots to high angle shots. Throughout the routine the camera is either panning the actors or matching on action. The constant changing of shots and angles I feel emphasizes the diversity in youth, which has been represented earlier when we see that there is a white girl, a black boy, and a white boy in the well-structured dance. Having these cuts edited so short and cutting so quickly also emphasizes the energy coming from the dancing teenagers, representing them as being very fit and energetic.

After they have danced, they all crash on the floor in a bundle joking about and jumping on each other. This contrasts with their serious expressions and synchronized movement in their dancing. This represents youth as hard working, but also shows that they know how to have a laugh. Noticeably the diversity in cinematography becomes limited as the tone of the scene relaxes. The acceptance and comfort with different ethnicities and sexes is also shown when the girl in the group takes her top off and then leaps on top on the black teenage boy and kisses him.

We are then presented with another representation of youth when Maxxie walks over to another teenage boy (the character of Tony) who is sitting in the dark at the back of the church. Tony looks zombified and shows youth as being clueless and moody. Tony mumbles slowly showing that he is either depressed or moody, suggesting that youth, although it has been shown to include having a laugh, and working hard, has other issues too.

The episode then cuts to an establishing shot of House of Fraiser, which is seen through a first person view. This is when some Non-diegetic music starts playing. The music is slow and calm, which emphasizes Tony’s depressed expression. The camera then cuts to Tony looking out the window and then shows a 2 shot of Maxxie and Tony sitting on the bus, when suddenly a truck drives past and blows its horn. This makes Tony jump. I feel this presents youth as being vulnerable and innocent, as he is obviously not feeling good and is easily scared. This is then emphasized by Tony grabbing Maxxie’s hand, not only does this shows innocence and vulnerability, but it also carries on this theme of acceptance of modern society as they are obviously comfortable with their sexuality.

The costumes, which the characters are wearing, are modern, clean and stylish clothes. Maxxie is wearing an open light blue shirt over the top of a pink and brown tank top. The colours are bold and bright, and there is a sense of confidence and a chilled out frame of mind as his shirt is open. This contrasts with Tony’s outfit, a buttoned up, burgundy cardigan over a white shirt. I feel this shows Tony to be less comfortable and having a deep dark colour such as burgundy emphasizes Tony’s depression.

After a 2 shot of the pair walking towards the camera, there is an underpinning of a girl’s voice. The camera then cuts to a shot of 5 very young girls lying on top of a black and bright yellow car. These girls have high voices, as you would expect a child too. They are wearing tracksuit bottoms, chains and baggy tops. Some with side pony tails, others with caps. One of which, perhaps the leader of the crew, is wearing make-up and hoop earrings. Overall they are represented as being a very cute bunch of children, emphasizing the representation of youth being innocent. The fact that they are interacting with Maxxie and Tony, and that they are wearing clothes, which their mum obviously didn’t pick for them, suggests that they look up to the elder youth and therefore represents the elder youths as being role models. The interaction between the two groups of friends is shown by the cutting to close ups of reaction shots.

In conclusion youth is represented as very diverse. We see this through: the friendly atmosphere between the different sexes and ethnicities; the range in emotions from working hard, to joking about with friends, to feeling depressed and uncomfortable; and through the ability to interact with different age groups. All of which are emphasized through the Cinematography, Editing, Mise en Scene, and Sound.

Impact

Over halfterm i have noticed media studies has made a big impact on me, as when im watching tv or films, i end up thinking in my head "theres a cut...cut...cut...and another..." This started at the beginning of halfterm when me and Grace had a movie night at her house, in which we both ended up shouting at the screen the different camera angles such as "over the shoulder!!!" or when there was a "CUT!!" Looking back, we are both pretty sad characters, but it's quite interesting how i now notice all the editing in the programmes i watch.

Editing

Editing involves transition of image and sound, continuity and non-continuity systems, cutting, jump cut, crosscutting, parallel editing, cutaway, insert, dissolves, fade-in, fade-out, wipe, long take, short take, slow motion and much more.

You can edit language, images, or sound through correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications in media. Film editing is in a way, storytelling. This is created by joining two or more shots together to form a sequence, once all the shots have been joined together a film is made.

Film editing is unique to cinema, however there are similarites to editing in other artisitic areas e.g. novel writing. Film Editing is often referred to as the "invisible art," this is because, if it is done well, you don’t even notcie th work of the editor.

However, the job of an editor isn’t just to mechanically put pieces of a film together, it is also to work with the layers of images, the story, the music, the rhythm, the pace, shapes the actors' performances, "re-directing" and often re-writing the film.
I very shortly looked at some editing myself in school, and found it quite tricky. I think this is mainly because you have to syncronize lots of different shots and angles with one camera.

Media: Religion and the Government

Today i watched a video in which it explored all the flaws of such things as Christianity and the American Government, amongst many other things. Unfortunately i have not watched the whole film, but i plan to do so. However, from what i have seen, i found that a lot of these flaws had been covered up by the media, for example, the terrorist attacks on the world trade centers, we were constantly having the words "terror", "terrorist" and "evil" pushed down our throats, when in fact, if you watch the video, there seems to be reason to question whether in fact these attacks were terrorist related. This video has also made me question whether Christianity is true or not? and has shown how we and the media influence each other to believe what we are told.
The film is very interesting, and i advise that you watch it. You can do this by simply clicking this link: www.zeitgeistmovie.com and scrolling down to the middle of the page in which the "June 18th 2007" version of "ZEITGEIST, THE MOVIE" is.

Sony Music and Pictures Entertainment

Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc. is the television and film production/distribution unit of Japanese media conglomerate Sony. Their group sale in 2007 has been reported to be of $8.58 billion.

Sony Music Entertainment is a major global record label controlled by the Sony Corporation of America, being one of the "big four" record companies. According to Variety, on October 2, 2008, Sony had completed the acquisition of Bertelsmann, and Sony BMG will be re-branded into Sony Music Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Entertainment produces and distributes such films as the new James Bond film “Quantum of Solace”. Not only do Sony Pictures Entertainment to films, but they also produce and distribute television programmes like “Jeopardy”. Sony Pictures Entertainment are clever in the way they cross promote. They do this in many ways:
Sony films will contain a Sony soundtrack.Sony adverts will contain more Sony products than the one they are advertising, for example, you could have an advert for a Sony sound system, but using a Sony TV and a Sony Playstation to advertise it. Much in the same way that Sony Music Entertainment can cross promote in their artist’s, such as Chris Brown and Beyoncé’s, music videos by slipping in an image of a Sony Eriksson for example.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.

Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” is a fantastic film about a group of Londoners who find themselves in dangerously heavy debt to local East End gang boss “Hatchet”. Having overheard a gang discussing robbing a group of drug growers, they decide to rob the robbers in turn. During this, another scam is going on, in which a pair of antique shotguns go missing, which leads to numerous characters linking up in the film building up to a big finale.

I thought Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” was an amazing motion picture. The story line was well composed giving a big build-up for the end of the film, leaving you on the edge of your seat ignorant of whether or not the gang will get the money in time. Not only did this film have incredible action scenes including gunfights and punch-ups, but it was also a very comical film. I felt the intended audience of Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” was most likely for teenage boys going on to late 20’s as it was typical blokes film with lots of action and a bundle of laughs.

The actors Guy Ritchie selected for this film where perfect for the part, for example Jason Statham is your typical London geezer, not only does he have the strong London accent, but he also looks like a proper London lad with his shaved head. I have seen Jason Statham in other shoot ‘em up films before and he just makes the films with this London attitude.

Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” is a definite must see, and a great film for a lad’s night in.
